Monthly Report May 2026

Forest Fire in Muckenbach Challenges Nittenau Firefighters.

Fire Department Operations

May 2026 was an eventful month: The Nittenau Fire Department responded to a total of 15 incidents during this period. The First Responder team was also exceptionally busy. With 45 emergency calls for first aid, May marked a new record high.

The fire department operations were divided into six fires, one first-aid response involving resuscitation, and eight technical assistance operations.

The month began with traffic control following an accident, where fortunately, worse consequences could be prevented. In addition, three activated fire alarm systems were reported, all of which turned out to be false alarms.

Our turntable ladder was called to the neighboring district of Pettenreuth to support the local firefighters at the scene of a solar module fire. Fortunately, a further spread of the fire could also be prevented there.

We were also called to support the response to a burning truck trailer. At the scene, we assisted the local fire departments with the water supply. Due to the dry conditions in May, the adjacent embankment had also caught fire.

Also in May, we were alerted to what has so far been the most demanding incident of 2026. In the district of Muckenbach, part of the city of Nittenau, a major forest fire broke out due to high temperatures and the prolonged dry period. A total of around 6,500 square meters of forest area was in flames.

The main challenge during this operation was transporting equipment and materials to the fire site. The scene was located deep in the forest and could not be reached directly by vehicles. After around five and a half hours, our part of the operation was completed. However, the extinguishing and cleanup work continued into the following day.

The end of the month did not allow us a quiet weekend either. After the heat came severe weather, which also left its mark on Nittenau. In total, we were alerted to seven storm-related incidents. Among other things, trees had to be removed from roads, buildings had to be secured, and a scaffold had to be cleared after it had fallen onto a parked car.

Fire Department Life

There was also a lot going on in the area of training and continuing education in May. Two of our active members successfully completed the CSA training course. Equally pleasing is the fact that ten of our firefighters successfully passed the intermediate examination of the Modular Firefighter Training Program, known as MTA.

The weekly training sessions focused on three different areas:

  • Attachments for the turntable ladder
  • I.V. access and emergency medication
  • Securing, restraint techniques and self-rescue

As is tradition, the Nittenau Fire Department once again took part in the vehicle blessing on May 1 this year. During the ceremony, our fleet of vehicles was blessed.

May also brought several other traditional events. At the Florian Day in Sollbach, we were able to spend a few enjoyable hours together. Our Father’s Day hike also took place again this year. The route led through the Regen Valley before everyone gathered for refreshments at Gasthaus Fuchs in Neuhaus.

With that, a very demanding, busy and eventful May comes to an end for the Nittenau Fire Department.
