Operations
In August, the Volunteer Fire Department of Nittenau was heavily challenged. With 14 fire service operations and 43 first responder missions, the month proved to be very demanding.
The fire service operations were divided into eight technical assistance missions, four fire incidents, and one security watch.
Technical Assistance
Among the technical assistance missions were two traffic accidents:
- A car skidded off the road due to heavy rain between Stefling and Marienthal.
- On the B16 feeder road near Nittenau, a car and a van collided.
In both cases, we secured the scene, ensured fire protection, and cleaned the road.
As in almost every month, we were once again dispatched to two aerial ladder rescues outside our response area – both times to Bernhardswald, in support of the ambulance service and the local fire department.
Additionally, we were alerted to two small animal rescues, a tree blocking the road, and a missing person search. Fortunately, the missing person was found safe and unharmed after a short time.
Fire Incidents
Of the five fire incidents, one turned out to be a false alarm caused by burnt food activating a fire alarm system.
Another incident involved a dryer fire, which was already contained thanks to the quick reaction of the residents, who used a fire extinguisher to prevent worse damage.
The most serious operation occurred at the end of the month:
A major fire at a farmstead in Harthöfl developed into the largest operation of 2025 so far. The glow of the fire was already visible on approach, and upon arrival, a barn was fully ablaze.
The first crews immediately established a water supply and set up a water barrier to protect the adjacent residential building. With massive use of water, the fire in the barn was fought. While most of the animals could be rescued, unfortunately some pigs perished in the flames.
The THW Schwandorf supported the operation with an excavator and wheel loader to clear out the barn and extinguish remaining embers. After around 14 hours, the large-scale operation involving about 300 emergency personnel was initially concluded, though overhaul operations continued for several days.
Fire Department Life August 2025
In terms of club and community activities, August was calmer: We visited our comrades of the Volunteer Fire Department Wackersdorf for their 150th anniversary celebration and took part in the parade.
In the area of training, the topics included a radio exercise with local knowledge, cutting and separating techniques, and incident site hygiene.
